Menstruation is the integral and major process that occurs in a female body. This vital functioning of females give birth to a new life.
Starting at the age of 13-14 years, menstruation becomes an essential part of their life till 50 years of age. And women tend to become habitual to this monthly regime of an awkward feeling, mood swings and pain in lower abdomen.
Normally the level of bleeding and period pain differs from woman to woman. Prolonged for 3-4 days, the pain is generally so severe and exhausting that most of the women turn towards painkillers, unable to bear the heavy pain and fatigue.
But these painkillers have many side effects and interferes with the natural functioning of the body.
Reason behind menstrual cramps
During menstruation, the inner blood lining of the uterus starts breaking down which results in contraction of the uterus. Strong contraction and devoid of blood along with hormonal changes results in mild to severe period pain.
Here we have compiled a list of home remedies for period pain:
1. Green tea
Green tea increases the flow of blood to the pelvic area. And helps the muscles to relax and thus decreases the period pain.
If you are a coffee addict, then replace it with tea during periods as coffee contains more caffeine than tea that will retain water and also make anxious.
- Drink 1 cup of green tea anytime in a day.
2. Papaya
Papaya contains many nutrients like keratin, iron, calcium and vitamins which help reduce the period pain and weakness in your body.
Also, the main component of papaya is an enzyme named ‘Papain’ that helps in an easy flow of blood and soothes down the aching muscles of the uterus during menstruation.
- Simply eat the papaya before and during periods.
3. Hot milk
Hot milk contains many other vital nutrients for the body along with calcium. It provides the strength required after so much loss of blood at the time of periods or menstruation. To reduce the fatigue and regain some strength hot milk is a wonderful remedy.
- Drink a glass of hot milk during breakfast.
4. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera juice and gel are beneficial for irregular periods, menstrual cramps, fatigue and abdominal pain. Over in all, it balances all the female hormones like estrogen and progesterone responsible for reproduction activity in women. It is a perfect natural remedy that eases the menstrual flow and helps relieve the extreme menstrual cramps.
Due to its antifungal and antibacterial properties, aloe vera is beneficial in treating uterine infection, vaginal infection and tone up the uterine tissue.
- For menstrual cramps, Mix aloe gel with honey and take it empty stomach.
- While suffering from late or irregular periods, mix aloe gel with jaggery and take every morning empty stomach, a week before the expected date.
- For white discharge, drink aloe vera juice empty stomach.
5. Hot water bag
Hot water provides a soothing feel to the aching muscles and reflexes. It is the most used and perfect remedy to ease away the extreme period pain.
- Apply hot water bag on the pain affected areas for few minutes.
- You can also take a hot shower bath.
6. Lavender oil
Lavender oil is also a good remedy for an instant relief from excruciating period pain. Its soothing properties provide relief within 15-20 minutes.
- Massage lavender oil on the aching abdominal areas.
7. Carrot juice
Carrot contains a lot of nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin C and potassium along with a lot of fiber. This provides relief from menstrual cramps. It eases down the menstrual flow ie blood flow and thus leads to a reduction in pain.
- Drink 2 glass of carrot juice a day to avoid the exhausting period pain.
8. Saffron or kesar
Saffron is an excellent natural herb to treat menstrual pain. It has analgesic and antiseptic properties that provide a soothing feel to the veins and tightening muscles.
Warning: Pregnant women should never take saffron as it can lead to miscarriage. Also, it should not be taken in excess.
- Add 1-2 strands of saffron to a glass of boiled milk. Drink this before going to bed at night.
9. Cinnamon
Cinnamon is anti-inflammatory and analgesic in nature and thus reduce the tightness and inflammation in lower abdomen muscles. It soothes down the pain naturally.
- Boil cinnamon stick in a cup of water and sip it like a tea.
